Three Days in Chemnitz

Three days give Chemnitz the space the city of modernism deserves. Day one belongs to culture downtown, day two to the Wilhelminian era and the famous industrial heritage, day three leads out into green Rabenstein with its castle, wildlife enclosure and Felsendome. This plan combines art, history and nature.

Day 1

Culture downtown

The first day gathers the great museums and landmarks downtown, ideal for getting into the Capital of Culture.

    Karl Marx Monument and market square

    Start at the Nischel, on to the market square with the Red Tower and the town halls. A first walk that makes the city's breaks and history tangible.

    smac in the Schocken department store

    The State Museum of Archaeology (smac) in the iconic Schocken building by Erich Mendelsohn tells the human history of Saxony across several floors.

    Lunch at max louis

    Modern, seasonal cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere at max louis, a good stopover downtown.

    Museum Gunzenhauser

    The Museum Gunzenhauser shows one of the most important collections of 20th-century art, above all works by Otto Dix.

    Dinner at Restaurant Janssen

    Upscale cuisine on the Kaßberg at Restaurant Janssen, a lovely finale to the culture day.

    Overnight downtown

    Centrally located and ideal for the second day: the Hotel an der Oper right on Theaterplatz.

Day 2

The Wilhelminian era and industrial heritage

The second day combines the magnificent Wilhelminian era of the Kaßberg with the industrial legacy that shaped Chemnitz.

    A walk across the Kaßberg

    A morning among bay windows, stucco and Art Nouveau façades. The Kaßberg is considered one of the largest contiguous Wilhelminian quarters in Germany.

    Villa Esche

    The Villa Esche by Henry van de Velde on the Kapellenberg is a total work of Art Nouveau and today a museum. A must for lovers of architecture and design.

  3. 13:00

    Lunch at the Villa Esche

    The restaurant in the Villa Esche combines upscale cuisine with the unique ambiance of the van de Velde building.

  4. 14:30

    Saxon Industrial Museum

    In a historic foundry, the Saxon Industrial Museum tells of 200 years of inventive spirit with steam engines, vehicles and the working world of the 'Saxon Manchester'.

  5. 19:00

    Dinner at the alexxanders

    On the Sonnenberg, the city's creative quarter, the alexxanders provides a sociable evening in a lively setting.

  6. 22:00

    Second night downtown

    Back to the central Hotel an der Oper to set off relaxed on the outing on the third day.

Day 3

Nature and an outing to Rabenstein

The third day leads out to the green edge of the city in Rabenstein with its castle, animal park and mysterious Felsendome caverns.

  1. 10:00

    Rabenstein Castle

    Rabenstein Castle is considered the smallest castle in Saxony. The compact residential tower with its ring wall houses a museum and offers an atmospheric start to the nature day.

  2. 11:30

    Wildgatter Oberrabenstein

    At the Oberrabenstein wildlife enclosure, native animals can be observed in spacious enclosures, ideal for a relaxed loop in the green.

  3. 14:00

    Felsendome Rabenstein

    A former limestone quarry whose underground halls and lakes can be walked through on guided tours. The Felsendome are a real natural spectacle below ground.

    Tip: Even in summer it is cool underground, so a jacket is worth bringing.

  4. 18:00

    Finale at the Turmbrauhaus

    Back downtown, a Saxon dinner with house-brewed beer at the Turmbrauhaus rounds off the three days.
