District

Sonnenberg

The Sonnenberg east of the center is a densely built Wilhelminian quarter that has developed in recent years into the creative and scene district of Chemnitz. For a long time the district was considered a problem area with many empty houses, but it was precisely these open spaces that attracted initiatives, artists, associations and young people who have breathed new life into the quarter.

Today small pubs, bars, studios, socio-cultural projects and colorful street art shape the streetscape. Around the venues on Zietenstraße and Jakobstraße, a lively, nonconformist culture is emerging that received special attention as part of the 2025 European Capital of Culture. The Sonnenberg stands for the Chemnitz of tomorrow, which dares to try something new out of what already exists.

Between the renovated and partly still unrenovated period buildings, you can feel the change and the mood of new beginnings. The district is authentic, affordable and open to experiment and is worthwhile for anyone who wants to experience the present-day spirit of the city of modernism away from the classic sights. From the center the Sonnenberg is quickly reached on foot or by tram.
