Schloßteich
The Schloßteich is the largest body of standing water in the heart of Chemnitz and one of the city's most popular recreation areas. It once began as a fish pond for the neighboring monastery on the Schloßberg and over the centuries became the central element of an extensive landscape park. Shady lakeside paths, old stands of trees and generous meadows wind around the water, inviting you to stroll, jog and linger in every season.
In summer the Schloßteich is one of the liveliest places in the city, as a boat rental invites you to row out on the water, and the small islands and the fountain give the pond a special charm. Families with children, sunbathers and cyclists throng the banks, and cafés and restaurants take care of your appetite. In winter, when there is enough frost, the ice surface is occasionally opened for skating.
The Schloßteich is closely connected to the Schloßberg and its museum via the Schloßteich island and the surrounding park grounds, so a visit to both destinations combines easily. Regular festivals, the Schloßteich Festival and concerts also make the area a cultural meeting point. Only a few minutes' walk from the center, the park offers a welcome break from the urban bustle and shows the green, livable side of Chemnitz.
