Altchemnitz

Altchemnitz south of the center is one of the oldest settlement cores of the city and in the 19th century became the engine of industrialization. Along the Chemnitz river and Zwickauer Straße, machine factories, spinning mills and workshops arose that earned Chemnitz its reputation as the 'Saxon Manchester'. To this day, brick buildings, factory chimneys and industrial architecture shape the face of the district.

In a former foundry sits the Saxon Industrial Museum Chemnitz, which brings 200 years of Saxon industrial history to life with historic machines, vehicles and testimonies of the working world. It is part of the European network of industrial heritage and a key to understanding what defined Chemnitz for decades.

Between commercial areas, residential houses and transport routes, Altchemnitz shows the industrial DNA of the city in its original setting. Anyone wanting to understand industrial heritage and the roots of the city of modernism cannot bypass this district. Via Zwickauer Straße and the tram, Altchemnitz is directly connected to the center.
