Chemnitz Art Collections
The Chemnitz Art Collections rank among the most important art museums in Saxony and are housed in the imposing King Albert Museum on Theaterplatz, one of the grand buildings of the boom years around 1900. The expansive building brings together painting, prints, sculpture, applied arts and a textile-art collection under one roof, linking back to the industrial past of this textile city. The collection ranges from German Romanticism through classical modernism to contemporary art.
A particular focus lies on Expressionism and the Brücke artists' group, since the Chemnitz-born painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff remained connected to the city throughout his life and donated numerous works to it. Alongside his pieces you can see paintings by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and many others. Regularly changing special exhibitions complement the permanent collection and make every visit a new experience.
The Chemnitz Art Collections are a network of several houses, which also includes the Museum Gunzenhauser, the Henry van de Velde Museum in the Villa Esche and Rabenstein Castle. In the 2025 Capital of Culture year the museum was at the heart of many exhibition projects that gave Chemnitz international visibility as an art city. Its central location on Theaterplatz makes a visit especially easy to combine with a walk through town.
