Theaterplatz
Theaterplatz is considered the most impressive and best-preserved square in Chemnitz and transports visitors straight back to the self-confident boom years around 1900, when the city ranked among the wealthiest industrial centers in Germany. Around the wide, open square stand several grand buildings, erected between 1905 and 1909 to designs by the architect Richard Möbius and forming a coherent piece of urban design.
The square is dominated by the opera house, whose stately façade and festive auditorium remain the venue for opera, ballet and concerts by the Robert Schumann Philharmonic. Opposite rises the Neo-Gothic St. Petri Church with its striking, far-visible tower, and on the third side stands the monumental King Albert Museum, which today houses the Chemnitz Art Collections. An equestrian statue and generous green spaces complete the picture and make the square a popular meeting place.
Especially in the 2025 Capital of Culture year, Theaterplatz was a central stage for the city's cultural life, with open-air performances, festivals and exhibitions. Anyone wishing to get to know the cultural side of Chemnitz will find the ideal starting point here, since the opera house, art museum and church lie just a few steps apart. From the nearby main station the square is only a few minutes' walk away.
