Museum Gunzenhauser
The Museum Gunzenhauser is one of the outstanding art addresses in Chemnitz and is housed in a strictly structured New Objectivity building on Falkeplatz that was originally built as a savings bank. The museum is based on the collection of the Munich gallery owner Alfred Gunzenhauser, who over decades amassed more than 2,400 works of classical modernism and left them to the city as a foundation. Since opening in 2007, the museum has presented this treasure across several floors.
The undisputed centerpiece is one of the world's most comprehensive collections of Otto Dix, with around 380 works, including paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints. Dix, one of the most important representatives of New Objectivity, is shown here in his full artistic range, from the unsparing portrait to the large-format painting. The collection is complemented by works by artists such as Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Münter, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and many other greats of modernism.
The Museum Gunzenhauser is part of the network of the Chemnitz Art Collections and contributes significantly to the city's reputation as a center of classical modernism. In the 2025 Capital of Culture year the house was involved in numerous exhibition and outreach projects. Its location near the main station makes the museum easy to reach and perfect to combine with a visit to the Art Collections on Theaterplatz.
