Villa Esche (Henry van de Velde Museum)
The Villa Esche in the elegant Kapellenberg district ranks among the most important Art Nouveau buildings in Germany and is an outstanding example of reform architecture around 1900. The Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde designed the estate from 1902 as a home for the Chemnitz textile manufacturer Herbert Esche and conceived it as a complete total work of art. Van de Velde planned not only the clear, elegant structures but also the interiors, the furniture, the wallpaper and even the table silver, so that architecture and furnishings form a harmonious whole.
Today the villa houses the Henry van de Velde Museum, which as part of the Chemnitz Art Collections shows the life and design world of the artist. In the faithfully restored rooms you can trace how a wealthy manufacturer's family lived at the start of the 20th century and how radically modern van de Velde's design language was for its time. Furniture, applied arts and documents illustrate the work of one of the most important pioneers of modern design.
The Villa Esche is surrounded by a well-kept garden and, alongside museum operations, also serves as a venue for concerts, receptions and a restaurant on the ground floor. In the 2025 Capital of Culture year the house underscored the role of Chemnitz as a city of modernism and industrial civic culture. Its location in the quiet villa quarter on the Kapellenberg makes a visit a rewarding detour away from downtown.
