Old and New Town Hall on the Market Square
The market square is the historic and geographic center of Chemnitz, and on its northern side two town halls shape the scene, together forming one of the few intact historic ensembles of the inner city. The Old Town Hall dates back at its core to the 15th century and impresses with an ornate Renaissance portal, the so-called Figures of Virtue and a striking tower. For centuries it was the seat of the city administration and a testament to the wealth Chemnitz once gained from bleaching and textiles.
Right next to it rises the New Town Hall, built between 1907 and 1911 in the Art Nouveau and Neo-Renaissance style. Its tall tower with a carillon towers over the square and is visible from afar, while the interior boasts a magnificent council chamber and elaborate murals. Both buildings are connected by a linking wing and are still used as the seat of the city administration today.
The market square itself was carefully reshaped after heavy war destruction and is once again a lively meeting place. Cafés and shops around the square invite you to linger, and weekly markets, festivals and, in Advent, the Christmas market regularly bring the area to life. From here the Red Tower, the pedestrian zone and the cultural quarter around Theaterplatz are all within easy walking distance.
