Rabenstein Castle
Rabenstein Castle on the western edge of Chemnitz proudly bears the title of the smallest castle in Saxony and is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the region. Its origins reach back to the second half of the 12th century; it was first mentioned in documents in 1336 under Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian. Set on a rocky outcrop above the Rabenstein forest, the complex once served to secure trade routes and is today a romantic little gem.
Despite its small size, the castle offers everything to make the hearts of medieval fans beat faster: a climbable keep, historic living quarters and a small museum that, as an outpost of the Chemnitz Art Collections, tells the castle's history. From the tower there is a lovely view over the wooded surroundings. Especially popular are the historical festivals, above all the long-standing 'Easter in the Middle Ages', which draws numerous visitors every year.
Embedded in an extensive recreation area, a visit to the castle combines wonderfully with a hike through the Rabenstein forest, a detour to the Oberrabenstein wildlife enclosure or to the nearby Felsendome caverns. The modest admission and the family-friendly program make the castle a rewarding destination for young and old. From downtown, Rabenstein is easy to reach by car or public transport.
