Wildgatter Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park
The Wildgatter Oberrabenstein is an expansive wildlife enclosure on the western edge of Chemnitz and a popular excursion destination for families, nature lovers and hikers. Embedded in the extensive Rabenstein forest, the enclosure shows, across generous grounds, mainly native and Central European animal species in as natural a setting as possible. On well-laid-out circular trails, visitors can observe the animals up close in their wooded enclosures.
Among the residents of the wildlife park are red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar and other forest animals that go about their natural behavior undisturbed. Lynx and other species that have become rare are also part of the stock and make the tour especially exciting. Informative panels convey knowledge about the animals' way of life and the native fauna, so the visit is also educational for children.
The wildlife park is part of the recreation area around the Oberrabenstein reservoir and combines wonderfully with an extended hike, a visit to nearby Rabenstein Castle or a detour to the Felsendome. Playgrounds, rest areas and shady forest paths make the area an ideal place for a relaxing day in the green. The fresh forest air and the wide open spaces offer a welcome contrast to everyday urban life in the center.
