Felsendome Rabenstein
The Felsendome Rabenstein are a disused limestone mine on the western edge of Chemnitz that is today accessible as a visitor mine and ranks among the most unusual excursion destinations in the region. For decades limestone was quarried here underground, creating a widely branching system of tall halls, passages and vaults. After mining ceased, parts of the complex filled with crystal-clear groundwater, leaving behind a fascinating underground realm of rock and water.
On guided tours, visitors walk through the enormous underground halls, whose walls are staged by artful lighting. The interplay of rugged rock, colored light and mirror-smooth water surfaces creates an almost magical atmosphere that impresses young and old alike. The mineral-rich, exceptionally clear water of the flooded areas also makes the Felsendome a well-known destination for trained cave divers.
Especially on hot summer days, the cool, evenly tempered mine is a pleasant retreat, and the atmospheric setting repeatedly serves as a venue for concerts and special events. A restaurant above ground rounds off the visit. Rabenstein Castle and the Oberrabenstein wildlife enclosure lie in the immediate vicinity, so you can plan a varied day out in the green west of the city.
