District

Kapellenberg

The Kapellenberg southwest of the center is one of the most elegant residential districts of Chemnitz. On the green hill, wealthy manufacturers and merchants had magnificent villas built in spacious gardens around 1900. To this day, generous plots, old stands of trees and stately architecture shape the quiet, well-heeled character of the district.

Its most famous building is the Villa Esche, which the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde designed from 1902 for the stocking manufacturer Herbert Esche. It is considered one of the most important testaments to Art Nouveau in Germany, because van de Velde created a total work of art here, from the building to the furniture to the cutlery. Today the Henry van de Velde Museum and a restaurant are housed in the villa.

Around the Kapellenberg, green spaces and the nearby Küchwald forest invite you to stroll. The district combines art history, upscale living and recreation and is easy to reach from downtown. For fans of Art Nouveau and architecture, the Villa Esche is a must on any visit to Chemnitz.
