Industrial Museum Chemnitz
The Industrial Museum Chemnitz is the central address for understanding the city's industrial past, once known for its smoking chimneys and huge factories as the 'Saxon Manchester'. The museum is housed in an impressive foundry hall on Zwickauer Straße, whose mighty steel structure from the early 20th century is itself an industrial monument. As part of the Route of Industrial Heritage, the museum documents around 200 years of Saxon economic history.
The permanent exhibition shows, on a generous floor area, the machines, vehicles and products that established the reputation of Chemnitz as a center of the textile industry, mechanical engineering and vehicle manufacturing. The range of exhibits spans from a mighty steam-engine drive to historic looms and machine tools and on to automobiles and motorcycles of the Wanderer and DKW brands. Many machines are demonstrated, so visitors can experience the enormous power and noise of industrial work firsthand.
With its vivid staging and hands-on stations, the Industrial Museum is a rewarding destination for families and the technically curious alike. It makes clear how much the city's identity is still shaped by craft, inventiveness and hard work. Its location in the south of the city on Zwickauer Straße is easy to reach by public transport and can be combined with other stops on the industrial heritage route.
