Klaffenbach Moated Castle
Klaffenbach Moated Castle lies idyllically on the southern edge of Chemnitz and ranks among the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Saxony. The complex was built from 1543, after the Annaberg mint master Wolf Hünerkopf acquired the land from the Saxon elector. The plain but elegant manor house with its characteristic round towers rises on an artificial island and is completely enclosed by a moat that gives it its unmistakable, romantic appearance.
After an eventful history and a thorough restoration in the 1990s, the castle came back to life and is today a versatile cultural and events center. In the rooms of the manor house and in the surrounding outbuildings, exhibitions, concerts, arts-and-crafts markets and weddings take place. Galleries, studios and an arts-and-crafts courtyard invite you to browse, and a hotel and restaurant make the area a popular excursion destination.
Around the castle stretches a well-kept parkland with wide meadows that invites you to stroll, while an adjoining golf course adds to the sporting offering. The moated castle is easy to reach by bike via the Chemnitz Valley cycle path and is ideal for a relaxed outing into the green. Especially with a view across the mirrored moat, the complex unfolds its full picturesque charm and thus counts among the most popular photo subjects in the Chemnitz surroundings.
